Position: Transmission Planning Project Manager
We are seeking a skilled Transmission Planning Project Manager to lead and execute complex engineering and consulting projects for power delivery utilities. This role involves conducting a broad range of transmission system studies and providing actionable recommendations to clients, including investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, and independent transmission providers. You will serve as both a technical expert and a client-facing project manager, supporting business development, executing projects, and mentoring junior staff.
This position requires a dynamic individual with deep knowledge of transmission systems, a strong technical background, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams while maintaining excellent client relationships.
Primary Responsibilities
Business Development
- Build and maintain client relationships through marketing and project interactions.
- Identify new opportunities and lead proposal development, including project scope, budget, and schedule.
- Develop project objectives and performance benchmarks in collaboration with clients.
- Negotiate contracts and agreements with clients.
Project Execution
- Oversee all aspects of project execution, including scope, schedule, and budget management.
- Ensure quality control and deliver actionable results to clients.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams of engineers and analysts to achieve project goals.
- Manage project risks and communicate status updates to stakeholders.
- Resolve technical challenges encountered during projects and present solutions to clients and internal teams.
Leadership and Training
- Mentor and train less experienced staff on technical and business practices.
- Lead training initiatives, including on-the-job coaching and formal classroom sessions.
- Serve as an industry expert in transmission planning and consulting.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) from an accredited institution (required).
- Advanced degrees (MBA, Master's in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, or Ph.D.) are a plus.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in transmission system studies, with at least 3 years managing engineering projects.
- Expertise in power system planning and operations, including transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis.
- Familiarity with NERC, FERC, and regional planning requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Experience with power system modeling tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, or Promod.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of electric transmission systems and planning processes.
- Effective project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
- Ability to work directly with clients to understand needs, develop scopes of work, and deliver results.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and industry-specific software.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical findings to diverse audiences.
