Job Overview:
The Civil Estimator will be responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a variety of civil construction projects, including roadways, utilities, site development, and other infrastructure works. This role involves a high level of detail and requires close collaboration with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure that bids are comprehensive and align with project requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
- Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes and negotiate pricing to ensure the most cost-effective solutions.
- Prepare detailed take-offs for all civil components of the project, including earthwork, utilities, grading, paving, and stormwater management.
- Develop and maintain a database of historical cost data for accurate benchmarking and cost forecasting.
- Review and assess project risks and opportunities and account for contingencies in estimates.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and bid reviews with the project team.
- Prepare bid documents, schedules, and all required supporting documentation for submission to clients.
- Collaborate with project managers and engineers to ensure alignment between estimates and project execution.
- Stay up-to-date with market trends, material costs, and industry regulations that could impact project estimates.
- Support post-bid negotiations and value engineering efforts as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 3-5+ years of experience as a civil estimator in the construction industry, with a focus on infrastructure and site development.
- Strong understanding of civil construction processes, materials, and equipment.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HCSS, Bluebeam, PlanSwift) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project).
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of local codes, regulations, and permitting processes in Northern Virginia is a plus.
