Job Title: Project Technical Engineer
Location: Remote or Massachusetts
Reports To: Senior Vice President, Construction & Operations
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Technical Engineer to support complex energy infrastructure projects, with a specific focus on microgrids and distributed energy systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the engineering design process across the project lifecycle, from initial development through to construction and operations. This position requires technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of energy projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate the engineering design process, ensuring project designs are optimized for operational efficiency and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Perform due diligence during feasibility studies, review designs for permitting, and oversee detailed design optimization.
- Review and approve shop and IFC drawings from the Engineer of Record and service providers.
- Conduct site visits and attend customer meetings to support project development and provide technical guidance.
- Contribute engineering input to inform financial models and support business case documentation.
- Develop and execute project design activities, from concept to issue-for-construction documentation, in collaboration with Solution Architects.
- Coordinate estimates for electrical equipment and installations, ensuring alignment with project timelines and budget.
- Conduct risk assessments and provide mitigation strategies throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain design guidelines for RFPs and coordinate engineering activities for external RFPs, including technical package preparation and bid evaluation.
- Manage engineering service contracts and oversee the Engineer of Record, ensuring the quality of work is maintained.
- Support the coordination of supply, construction, and commissioning contracts, ensuring the timely delivery of project milestones.
- Monitor quality assurance processes and address any non-conformities.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager to assess design changes and ensure change orders are processed accurately.
- Support commissioning and startup phases, ensuring the smooth transition to operations and maintenance.
- Prepare technical proposals and assist the deal development team in the preparation of RFP responses.
- Maintain clear communication with team members and stakeholders regarding project status.
- Assist in the evaluation and qualification of potential partners, including contractors and service providers.
- Continuously improve design methodologies, incorporating lessons learned and best practices.
Time Allocation:
- 25% - Support Project Development
- 60% - Design, Construction, and Commissioning Phase
- 5% - Operation and Maintenance Service Phase
- 10% - Other Responsibilities
Qualifications:
Experience:
- At least 6 years of experience in the design of energy systems, including central plants, microgrids, and power generation facilities utilizing various distributed energy resources.
- Experience managing multi-faceted, complex projects from design through execution and commissioning.
- Knowledge of HSE, OSHA, ISO, and regulatory standards applicable to central plants and microgrids.
- Familiarity with distributed multi-technology energy systems such as solar, energy storage systems (BESS), gas engines, fuel cells, microgrid controls, and asset management.
- Experience in project finance and corporate finance is a plus.

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) License is required.
- A Master's degree in Engineering is a plus.
Travel Requirements:
- Up to 25% domestic and international travel for site visits, meetings, and supplier visits.
