Overview:
My client is a leader in the development, financing, and operation of distributed utility-scale solar, storage, and solar + storage assets for commercial, industrial, municipal, and utility customers across the United States.
Position:
My client is seeking an experienced renewable energy engineer with a strong background in utility interconnection processes for small to medium-sized utility-scale DER projects, standalone BESS, and PV+BESS. The Project Engineer will be responsible for high-level system design, including interconnection design activities and facilitating detailed RFP responses. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, this role is integral to expanding my client's pipeline of standalone energy storage and solar-plus-storage projects.
Specific Job Functions:
The Project Engineer will support the design and interconnection of the client's portfolio and contribute to expanding their storage footprint across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast urban centers, and other U.S. markets. Responsibilities include:
Energy Storage System Design:
- Create conceptual Single Line Diagrams.
- Review and assist with IFP (30%) and IFC (90%) designs.
- Develop plant layouts considering site limitations.
- Select system hardware through coordination with vendors.
- Optimize system performance and calculate CAPEX.
- Develop preliminary and detailed project schedules.
Engineering Support:
- Apply standard engineering principles to evaluate design feasibility for BESS and PV+BESS systems.
- Support the permitting stages with local AHJs.
- Compile, manage, and award engineering service RFPs.
Interconnection Process:
- Evaluate and optimize interconnection alternatives based on cost, schedule, and risk.
- Assess interconnection costs for siting new projects.
- Manage utility relationships to secure timely interconnection agreements.
Consultant and Vendor Engagement:
- Engage external consultants for detailed designs, applications, and studies.
- Serve as the primary technical and utility communication contact.
Proposal and RFP Support:
- Facilitate detailed technical responses for RFPs.
- Develop EPC work scopes.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel to project sites across North America to evaluate equipment and sites.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred).
- 2-4 years of experience in energy storage design, interconnections, utility medium voltage equipment, project development, and related electrical engineering fields.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with electrical construction techniques, NEC, IEEE standards, and medium/low voltage electrical systems.
- Proficiency in software applications like Microsoft Suite, AutoCAD, PVCASE, PVSYST, Helioscope, SAM, and ideally ETAP, SKM, and CYME.
