An international utility that specializes in power generation and operates as a key player in the electricity sector, focusing on both conventional and renewable energy is looking to bring on a Project Development Manager to focus on expanding their BESS portfolio in ERCOT. The company has a diversified portfolio, including coal-fired power plants, gas-fired power plants, and renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, and energy storage systems.
This company operates in several countries, including Thailand, China, Japan, Vietnam, and Las and is hoping to expand its renewable energy capacity in the United States as part of its commitment to sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions.
BASIC JOB PURPOSE
- Execute country BESS strategy by preparing list of projects for acquisition, green field development, joint ventures and divestitures.
- One or two BESS projects to achieve commissioning from 2025 onwards year on year and develop portfolio according to company guidelines.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Project Acquisition:
- Develop pipeline of at least 4 projects to be presented to executive committee.
- Work with other developers to acquire brown filed / shovel ready projects.
- Start work on self-development, which shall be shovel ready in 2 years.
Green Field / BrownField project development:
- Identify potential project sites, assess feasibility, and manage site selection processes.
- Conduct comprehensive market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and potential risks related to BESS projects.
- Develop and nurture strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, and local communities.
Business Case Preparation (techno- commercial):
- Develop structures, merchant/ PPA or mix.
- Work with government agencies for grants
- Work with banks for debt structures.
Overview project execution:
Including engineers, finance professionals, and legal experts for seamless project execution.
- Stay updated with industry developments, technological advancements, and policy changes to ensure project competitiveness and compliance.
Strategic initiatives:
- Incorporate AI / Software in BESS projects.
- Margin improvements initiatives on operating / potential assets.
- Promote Cross Learnings within regions.
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The most important tasks performed on an individual basis apart from principle accountabilities.
- Work with external developers to acquire projects brown field and navigate market to develop green field projects.
- Deliver revenue and gross margin as expected by management on projects.
- Liaise with government, consultants, bankers to understand the intricacies of BESS projects and support / risks involved in the projects.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Renewable Energy, Business, or related field.
- Proven experience in renewable energy project development, with emphasis on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Strong grasp of energy market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and permitting processes.
- Excellent project management skills, adept at handling multiple projects concurrently.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, fostering collaboration with internal teams and external partners.
- Problem-solving mindset and adaptability to evolving project requirements.
- Proficiency in relevant software tools for project management, data analysis, and presentations.
Experience
- 2-3 years' experience in BESS project development.
- In depth understanding of the regulatory framework pertaining to renewable energy projects.
- Good understanding of the energy market
- Understanding of relevant revenue streams for renewable energy and BESS.
- Negotiation skills and understanding of relevant agreements related to land access and development services
- Excellent skills in MS Office software especially Excel, PowerPoint and MSProject.
- Relationship management - ability to work in matrix corporate environments.
Skill
- Modelling, simulation, optimization, data analysis, and project management, to plan, optimize, and evaluate energy storage projects.
- Assess the feasibility, viability, and profitability of energy storage and renewable energy projects, taking into account the costs, benefits, risks, and opportunities.
