Position: Principal Structural Engineer
Location: Columbus, OH
We are seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to join our growing team. This role is essential in leading engineering design projects and fostering client relationships. The successful candidate will collaborate with a broader team of engineering professionals to deliver design solutions for industrial clients both nationally and internationally. The projects involve complex structures and foundations for industrial, manufacturing, and utility clients. This individual must be self-driven, capable of independently resolving challenges, and able to communicate technical issues and solutions effectively with clients and team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Structural Engineering team.
- Provide high-level technical services and support for client projects.
- Offer technical leadership, mentoring, and policy support to junior engineers and staff.
- Plan, direct, and oversee projects from proposal through to completion.
- Make key technical decisions to ensure client satisfaction and meet company objectives.
- Identify and address complex structural issues using analytical tools.
- Understand and develop system architectures and component relationships.
- Lead and coordinate work activities among internal teams, clients, and external partners.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and quality assurance processes.
- Recognize and address problems with incomplete or conflicting information.
- Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation plans.
- Initiate corrective actions to resolve shortcomings in design processes.
- Perform and supervise complex structural calculations and reviews.
- Conduct or oversee on-site inspections for clients.
- Mentor and train junior technical staff, contributing to their professional development.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to supervisors, management, and clients.
- Engage in client development and proposal generation to secure new business.
- Ensure technical assessments and design decisions balance uncertainty and risk.
- Actively participate in personnel assessments and development.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering.
- 10+ years of experience in structural design and project management.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), NCEES Record preferred.
- Experience designing complex structures, including industrial buildings, heavy equipment platforms, pipe bridges, and trussed systems.
- Expertise in shallow and deep foundation design based on geotechnical recommendations.
- Proven track record in client relations and proposal development.
- Willingness to travel up to 15% nationally and internationally.
Location: Hybrid, with 1-2 days in the office in Columbus, Ohio.
