Position: Geotechnical Practice Lead

About the Opportunity:
I am currently partnering with a leading, employee-owned firm that operates over 50 offices across North America. This industry leader is known for tackling some of the world's most challenging projects-from addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development to building critical infrastructure. They are now seeking to expand their Maryland office by adding a talented Geotechnical Practice Lead.
In this pivotal role, you will drive the growth of the geotechnical practice across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Your work will focus on high-impact projects, including foundations, tunnels, dams, excavation support systems, ground improvement, and environmental initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Business Development:
- Lead efforts to identify and target key clients and strategic business areas.
- Develop and implement strategies for growth and market capture.
- Foster cross-selling opportunities to expand the firm's service offerings to existing clients.
2. Client Engagement:
- Drive proposal efforts and maintain a strong presence in the marketplace through consistent client interaction.
- Participate in and promote active involvement in professional organizations and industry networks.
- Deliver presentations at client meetings and industry events to showcase expertise and reinforce client relationships.
3. Technical Leadership:
- Commit to technical excellence while balancing client expectations, satisfaction, and profitability.
- Serve as a technical leader and mentor, guiding the team to achieve high standards in project delivery.
4. Recruitment and Training:
- Contribute to recruitment initiatives, ensuring the successful integration and development of new staff members.
- Support the creation of a cohesive, skilled team that aligns with the practice's long-term objectives.
5. Strategic Planning:
- Actively participate in strategic planning at the office, regional, and national levels, contributing valuable insights to drive practice growth.
6. Leadership and Oversight:
- Provide senior-level oversight and serve as the Engineer of Record, ensuring all projects comply with technical and regulatory standards.
Travel Requirements:
- Overnight travel is required, approximately 20% to 30% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
- 15+ years of progressive experience in geotechnical and/or geostructural engineering, with a strong focus on the DC Metropolitan area, Maryland, and Virginia markets.
Education:
- M.S. degree (or higher) in Civil, Structural, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
Business Development:
- Proven track record as a Seller-Doer with strong client relationships, an entrepreneurial mindset, and the ability to generate new business and expand market presence.
Technical Expertise:
- Extensive and diverse technical background with a deep understanding of geotechnical and/or geostructural engineering principles.
- Recognized for delivering technical excellence and developing innovative, client-focused solutions.
Leadership and Collaboration:
- A team builder with exceptional interpersonal skills, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
Communication Skills:
- Exceptional technical report writing and communication skills, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey complex concepts.
Licensing:
- Active Professional Engineering (PE) license is required.
Travel:
- Willingness and ability to travel to the firm's branch offices, project sites, and client locations as necessary.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid U.S. driver's license.
