They are looking for a professional with demonstrated expertise in geotechnical engineering design and project management, who embodies top-tier knowledge of relevant design standards and client service excellence. This individual will become part of a thriving and highly successful team of experienced and dedicated engineers, geologists, and technical staff. The role reports directly to the department manager.
The main responsibility of this role is to enhance, support, and advance our geotechnical design capabilities. The individual will work collaboratively within the team to exceed client expectations through effective communication, project planning and execution, and budget management, while also working to grow Summit's client base. Additionally, this role involves providing mentorship and training, as well as reinforcing existing QA/QC design practices.
Responsibilities:
- Identify and develop opportunities to diversify Summit's client base and project types.
- Deliver sound engineering designs and solutions in accordance with applicable design standards, enhance our technical design expertise, and collaborate with engineers and geologists to produce outstanding project deliverables.
- Conduct technical and quality peer reviews of others' work when not serving as the lead designer on a project.
- Assist with project pursuits, teaming opportunities, and preparing statements of qualifications (SOQs) for new projects.
- Work with the team to develop scopes of work, man-hour estimates, project planning, progress reports, invoicing, and responses to SOQs, RFPs, and LOIs as needed.
- Manage all aspects of multiple projects, varying in scope, complexity, and contract value.
- Collaborate effectively within the team to support projects and departmental initiatives.
- Serve as an ambassador for growth opportunities at Summit and work with the leadership team to mentor and develop staff.
- Set an example of excellence within the group and seek opportunities to mentor staff and foster team synergy.
What you will need to bring:
- 10-20+ years of experience in geotechnical design for Department of Transportation projects and/or private sector projects (e.g., commercial, municipal).
- Licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina or Virginia
- Proven ability to manage client satisfaction, foster team collaboration on projects and pursuits, and drive business development.
- Capability to interface with clients and manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they remain within scope, schedule, and budget.
- Proficient technical writer and detailed reviewer of design calculations, structural and foundation inventories, and roadway inventories and recommendations.
- Extensive knowledge of NCDOT practices, policies, and procedures, including the Geotechnical Engineering Unit's 'Guidelines and Procedure Manual' and other relevant design standards (e.g., LRFD).
- NCDOT Prequalification codes related to Geotechnical Engineering and Geotechnical Design.
- Demonstrated excellence in project management, including key performance indicators, client management, and risk management.
- Strong leadership skills and a desire to lead the design side of the Geotechnical group, fostering growth and mentorship within the team.
